The Most Expensive Meal I Ever Cooked

Oh my god, I’m such an idiot.  Last night, I was so happy to just come home from work, not have to go to a second job, listen to This American Life, and finally cook out of Appetite For Reduction.  And I did all those things.  But I also did the stupidest thing ever, which I’m so so mad at myself for.  Story to follow!

I made Chili-Lime-Rubbed Tofu and Pasta de los Angeles.  And, as promised by bloggers everywhere and as you would expect from Ms. Moscowitz, they were easy to make, flavorful, and filling.  Really, I cannot complain.  I didn’t change much except that I cooked the tofu longer than she says because I always do that.  Here’s a delightful picture:

I love spinach, and the recipe wasn’t ruined by the tomatoes being out of season, and the beans really add to the deliciousness.  Here’s a better picture of the pasta.

So what am I complaining about?  I’ll tell you.  I’m so stupid, I took the tofu out of the oven and put it on my stove top to cool.  And then I went about boiling the water for the pasta and continued on my way.  At some point, I became aware of a mysterious sizzling sound and was all, “WTF is that?”  That’s when I noticed I’d turned on the wrong burner and was not heating water for boiling.  Instead, I was heating my already cooked tofu, and it looked all burny and pissed off.  I literally screamed, grabbed a potholder, and moved the casserole dish off the burner and onto the counter.  It instantly shattered into a million pieces, dropping a few of the tofu slabs into the cat’s food dish below, but actually, mostly sparing the food.  Then, because I’m so, so, so stupid, I actually left the large pieces of shattered glass on my counter to cool.  And that is how, one month before I was ready to move out, I spent my security deposit (and lost my beloved casserole dish).  Here’s a significantly less delightful picture:

Arrrrrgh!!  I’m so mad at myself!!  My handy friend, Sonny, tells me that it shouldn’t cost more than $100 to replace my tiny-ass counter top, but STILL.  I really wanted that $100.  So this meal really cost me!

Eh, who am I kidding?  I could never stay mad at you, delicious and healthful meal.  Your charms work on me every time…

Your pasta looks wonderful. It is a shame about the counter. This is my first visit here, so I took some time to browse your earlier entries. I really like the food and recipes you feature here. I plan to be back. I hope you have a wonderful day. Blessings…Mary

Too bad that "Pasta de Los Angeles" was the most expensive meal you ever made. I made it the other day and although it wasn't BAD, it was definitely my least favorite of Isa's recipes and it made my husband discover after years of high cilantro consumption that he actually hates cilantro. The tofu looks awfully tasty though!

I used to think I hated cilantro, but learned relatively recently that I lovvvve it. I'm not going to lie, though, a lot of my pasta went to waste, I couldn't finish eating the leftovers.
